Rawlings Lowers Costs and Improves Customer Service With dcLINK®
dcLINK, JD Edwards Warehouse Management System and Motorola enabled Rawlings to reduce their labor cost per carton 47%
Overland Park, Kansas — December 7, 2009 — The start of baseball season brings joy and hope to thousands of fans and players across the country. But for the warehouse staff at Rawlings, a leading marketer and manufacturer of baseball equipment and other sporting goods, preparing for the season brought a lot of stress.
That's why Rawlings implemented DSI's dcLINK automated data collection with Oracle's JD Edwards Warehouse Management System (WMS) to automate warehouse operations from receiving to shipping. "We knew that there would be RF requirements to make a warehouse management system work," said Jack Matthews, Rawlings' IT Director. "The logical choice was DSI."
dcLINK's integration with JD Edwards enables Rawlings to use Motorola MC9090-G mobile computers to automate essential warehouse functions including receiving, directed putaway, picking, directed replenishment, packing, shipping, and cycle count. Rawlings relies on dcLINK and JD Edwards to manage up to 19,000 warehouse transactions a day at their Washington facility.
Rawlings has achieved significant business benefits, including:
- Reduced labor cost per carton 47%. Rawlings' cost per carton is one of their most important warehouse performance metrics and includes all the variable labor costs incurred while preparing a carton for shipment to the customer.
- Reduced headcount at the warehouse labor, clerical, and supervisory levels. "We're turning out more product than we were three or four years ago, and we're doing it with about 25 percent fewer people," said Campbell. "Plus, our inventory accuracy has improved and picking errors have gone down considerably."
- More than 75% reduction in back orders. "We've been able to go from being a good performer to a top performer," said Mike Campbell, Rawlings' Director of Distribution. "I've got e-mails from customers stating that we're ‘the best' at delivering sporting goods."
